IC3 2010 Annual Report on Internet Crime Released
FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The 2010 Internet Crime Report was released today by the Internet Crime
Complaint Center (IC3). The report demonstrates how pervasive online crime has become, affecting
people in all demographic groups throughout the country. In 2010, IC3 received 303,809 complaints of
Internet crime, the second-highest total in IC3’s 10-year history. Data Privacy Day

Data Privacy Day is an international holiday that has been in existence since 2009 that is celebrated on January 28 in the United States, Canada, and 27 European countries. The holiday was established to raise awareness of and promote data privacy. Based on recent studies, over 70 percent of American homes have a computer and over 80 percent of Americans have access to the Internet. With numbers like that, it is important to keep your sensitive information private. Data Privacy Day is a day that should serve as a reminder for Internet users to exercise caution online and to stay vigilant in protecting personal information.
Pontoon Boat Scam
RICHMOND, VA - The National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) would like you to
exercise caution when purchasing items online.
There is a pontoon boat scam that has surfaced on the Internet. The scam consists of a seller
advertising a pontoon boat with all the trimmings for a very low and sometimes unrealistic price.
The seller is willing to part with the item for such a low price because he claims he is in the
military and will have to deploy immediately. He will accept whatever money he can get
quickly and is willing to give the buyer the deal of the lifetime in the process, and he even offers
to pay shipping.
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month
RICHMOND, VA - The National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) reminds you that October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month.
National Cyber Security Awareness Month is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security. This year’s theme Stop. Think. Connect. raises awareness among the American public about the need to strengthen cyber security-and to generate and communicate new approaches and strategies to help Americans increase their safety and security online.
NW3C Presents Member Agency Award of Excellence
Richmond, VA - On September 26, the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) Board of Directors presented the Connecticut Department of Banking’s Securities and Business Investments Division with the Member Agency Award for Excellence for demonstrating great initiative in ensuring that necessary training was provided to the law enforcement members in their state. The award was presented by West Virginia State Auditor Glen B. Gainer, III, who is Chairman of the NW3C Board of Directors, at the North American Securities Administrators Association’s (NASAA) Annual Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.

Richmond, VA - Intellectual property (IP) crime puts lives at risk and threatens public safety by passing off counterfeit goods as genuine including pharmaceuticals, vehicle parts, and baby formula. Crimes involving IP have been linked to organized crime, gangs and terrorism. As a response to this serious threat, the Bureau of Justice Assistance has partnered with the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) and the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) to develop and provide training to state and local law enforcement to help fight IP crime.
